Just a quick post to say that the DC Metro Yarn Crawl begins today, Saturday, April 14th, and lasts for nine days. You can get all the details here.
And as you’d expect, we’ve got something special for the crawl. Besides shelves stocked with newly arrived String Theory and Madtosh DK (gorgeous!), we’ve got a trunk show of the beautiful Swan’s Island yarn, also in stock.

Anna cowl, one of ten projects on display in the store
Swan’s Island is another yarn from Maine, but very different from String Theory. The colors are subtle, not brilliant, subdued like a mist-covered landscape. And that’s no accident: the yarns are produced and spun organically, and all the colors are from natural, plant-based dyes. This is yarn for a connoisseur — organic, natural, hand-dyed goodness that is a dream to knit with. You can read about about this small, local company and the way they approach their yarn production and dyeing at the Swan’s Island website — and then come on in to see for yourself.

Not the best picture I’ve ever taken, but it gives you some idea of the incredible depth and richness of String (not spring!) Theory yarn. Dyed in Blue Hill, Maine by Karen and Tanis, this beautiful yarn rewards the knitter with its delicious softness and glowing color. And just in time for the yarn crawl, we have a new shipment of both Caper Sock and Merino DK.
So what to make? Caper Sock includes cashmere in its blend, but still gives great stitch definition. Look at the Haleakala sock, designed by sock genius Cookie A for her sock club and now available to the public. But you don’t have to go all fancy; even your plainest vanilla sock is special in Caper. And of course, it’s a phenomenal choice for a shawlette, like Chadwick.
Merino DK screams cardigan to me. At least one person at the shop is making Gnarled Oak from the Rocky Coast book, and I have plans for a Flyaway. But what about a delicious cowl? I think one with a very simple stitch pattern, like Circumnavigate, would be amazing.
So come in and take a look at this hard-to-find yarn. It’s a lot easier than driving to Blue Hill!

Making one last trip to Knit and Stitch before Christmas? We’re ready for you with a few new things in the shop:
- Lots of new colors of Malabrigo. If you haven’t yet knit with this gorgeous yarn, make a New Year’s resolution to give it a try. So, so soft.
- New colors of Cascade 128 and Cascade 220 Sport Superwash. The 220 Sport would make great socks — not as thick as worsted socks, but much, much quicker to knit than socks made from fingering-weight sock yarn. And because it’s superwash, you can throw them in the washing machine.
- And, if you’re in need of a last-minute gift for a knitter or crocheter, check out these Pretty Cheep project bags from Blue Sky Alpacas. Aren’t they cute? They’re just the right size for socks, mittens, cowls or other small- or medium-sized projects. You know what else would fit right inside? A Knit and Stitch gift certificate!
