Knitting little hats

As knitting projects go, little hats are just about perfect. They’re ideal canvases for trying out stitch patterns, color palettes, new techniques and embellishment. And because they’re for small heads, they’re super-quick as well. That also makes them (almost) risk-free — if a hat doesn’t come out quite as you planned, you haven’t wasted weeks of your life knitting it. Oh, and also, they’re darn cute.

Baby hats!!

Surely there's a little person in your life who needs a cute hat?

Starting next Wednesday (April 6), I’ll be teaching a workshop in which you’ll design your own baby or child hat. (And frankly, a hat’s a hat — if you want to knit an adult hat, the rules are the same!!) I’ll teach you everything you need to know; as long as you can cast on, knit and purl, you’re good to go. This is a great chance to learn some embellishment techniques to spiff up any of your knitting projects — if you’ve never knit i-cord, made a pompom or experimented with stripes, this workshop will teach you all of those things! Plus, you’ll learn to knit in the round, which is a great skill to have in your bag of tricks. (Though if you’ve knit hats before and just want to take the class so you can knit cute hats with other knitters, come on down!!)

First, you’ll use a worksheet to sketch and plan the perfect hat (don’t worry — I’ll provide the colored pencils!). What does your ideal hat look like? Pompoms? Tassels? Stripes? Blocks of color? Rolled brim? Once you’ve got a picture in your head (and on your worksheet), we’ll work together to create a customized pattern for your hat. I’ll teach you how to knit in the round on circular needles and double-pointed needles. And I’ll teach you some fun techniques for embellishing your hat any way you like. Then all you need to do is find a small head to show off your work. Because no matter how cute that hat looks on the needles, it’s going to be even cuter on a little head!

Interested? Call the shop at (301) 652-8688 to sign up. The class meets Wednesdays, April 6 and 20 from 7 to 9 p.m. (I’ve left an extra week in between so you’ll have plenty of time to do the bulk of the knitting before we meet up again.) Registration fee is $60 (materials not included, but the pattern is). Here are the materials you’ll need, so you’ll be all ready to go when the workshop begins:

  • Worsted-weight yarn in as many colors as your heart desires (recommended: Cascade 220); 100 to 150 yards TOTAL is a generous estimate
  • US 7 16-inch circular needles and set of four double-pointed needles (or size to obtain gauge)
  • US 5 16-inch circular needles (or two sizes smaller than size to obtain gauge) — these are optional, but they make for a more snug-fitting brim.
  • Stitch marker
  • Tapestry needle

If you have questions about the workshop, don’t hesitate to e-mail me at becky_sher@verizon.net or leave a comment here!

Weekend inspiration

The weekend has already started, but it’s never too late for a little inspiration …

  • Crocheted fan scarfOur customer, Susan, was in the shop last weekend and shared with us this gorgeous crocheted scarf (at right). We had to immediately snap a photo. Guess what? The pattern is actually for a bookmark! Instead of the thread called for in the pattern, Susan used yarn to create this fluffy ruffled scarf. Yay for crochet!
  • Another customer, Kim, shared this FREE pattern that she’s planning to knit: a bulky, garter-stitch cowl. Doesn’t it look cozy? And on size 17 needles, it’s a one- or two-evening project. (A last-minute gift, perhaps?) This would look beautiful in Blue Sky Alpacas Bulky or Rowan Big Wool.
  • While scanning Anthropologie’s holiday offerings this week, I spotted these pretty hand soaps with crocheted covers. And that reminded me of these: crochet-covered sea stones, on the Purl Bee. World Market has lots of inexpensive round hand soaps in lovely fragrances that would work perfectly for this project. It would make a relatively quick gift for someone on your list. Or, if you don’t crochet, just buy the pretty soap and knit a washcloth to go with it.
  • Speaking of washcloths/dishcloths, this designer has patterns for dishcloths featuring a menorah, a dreidel and a star of David. This would make nice hostess gifts if you’re headed to someone’s house for Hanukkah.
  • Did a baby come into your life this year? You still have time to knit the little one a Christmas stocking before the big day. (If you get cracking!) This would be a perfect first stocking — I love the car motif on the boy’s version.

JUST A REMINDER …

Did you enter our giveaway to win a copy of the wonderful “Red Collection”? No worries — you’ve got time. We’ll choose a winner at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 24.

AND ANOTHER ONE …

We’re getting excited for our Black Friday sale! The action starts at 7 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 26. Stock up for holiday knitting and crochet, or treat yourself to something. We’ll see you then!

    Sale scoop

Some people are born shoppers, and some aren’t. Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, seems to put those groups in sharp contrast. You’re either planning to set your alarm clock for 4 a.m. that morning, or you’re all set to lock yourself in your house, with only leftover pumpkin pie for company.

Whichever description fits you, surely we can all agree that a great Black Friday sale at Knit and Stitch is worth making time for. If you’ve got a full shopping agenda that day, we’ll be open bright and early at 7 a.m., so you can hit the shop first thing. Plus, we’ll be open late, until 8 p.m., so you can stop by after a full day of shopping to browse the yarn and maybe knit or crochet a stitch or two.

Yarn!If your only plans for the day after Thanksgiving are to avoid the crowds at the mall and make some headway on handmade holiday gifts, Knit and Stitch is the perfect place for you too. Wander in for great deals all day, and sit and stitch a while too. Don’t tell anyone we said this, but it’s a great way to escape the in-laws.

Here are a few more details on our Black Friday sale:

Starting at 7 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 26, we’ll be open for post-holiday stitching and HUGE discounts all day long. And we’ll be open late, until 8 p.m. So even if you have other shopping to do, you can end your day at Knit and Stitch.

What kind of huge discounts are we talking about?

7 to 8 a.m.: 25 percent off your entire yarn purchase
8 to 9 a.m.: 20 percent off your entire yarn purchase
9 to 10 a.m.: 10 percent off your entire purchase

Sale yarns will be 50 percent off all day, and we’ll have rotating specials throughout the day on some of your favorite yarns and tools. Just to give you a sneak peek, here are some of the yarns that will be on sale at various points throughout the day: Rowan Big Wool, Rowan Calmer, all baby yarns … and more!

And did we mention door prizes and other fun surprises?! Plus, we’ll have extra staff on hand to help you pick out gift patterns, troubleshoot projects already in progress and make yarn suggestions.

We’ll see you on the 26th! And no one will argue if you bring along that extra slice of pumpkin pie.
